Planning for a Super Bowl Party?

Here's your playbook to score a touchdown with your Super Bowl party guests.

A group of people are sitting on a couch watching a football game.

Ready for Super Bowl LIII? Whether you're a football fanatic or just in it for the ads (or a potential Taylor Swift sighting), gearing up for the big game requires more than just nachos and a comfy couch! While prepping for the day, one thing you might not consider is the liability risks you face while hosting a party. Before you dive into hosting or attending a Super Bowl party, let's huddle up and check your game plan. 🏈

  1. Avoiding Fumbles in the Kitchen 🍳
Safety first, flavors second! If you are using the stove, keep a close eye on the stovetop to avoid any grease fires, burns, and injuries. Keep the kitchen area clear and request that guests give you space while you prepare the game day goodies. Never leave the kitchen unattended if the stove is on.

If you’re planning on grilling out, make sure to only use the grill outside and don’t leave the grill unattended for long periods. Grilling inside, in garages, or partially enclosed rooms is extremely dangerous.

  2. Securing Your Entertainment Center📺
Excitement can turn your living room into a football frenzy! Make sure your TV is securely mounted or positioned to prevent game day mishaps. If children are attending your party, they could get seriously hurt from a TV tipping over. Let's not let a toppled TV be our post-game highlight.

  3. Keeping Your Home Accident-Free 🚶‍♂️
Colder weather brings new hazards. Before your guests arrive, make sure your home, driveway, stairs and walkway are clear of any potential trip and fall hazards and prevent accidents. Move breakables away from enthusiastic fans, and let's avoid any accidental touchdown dances near your prized possessions! Accidental breakage is typically excluded from your homeowners or renter's policy.

  4. Understanding Social Host Liability 🚗
A good defensive strategy is to familiarize yourself with your state's Social Host Liability Laws! In some states, party hosts can be held responsible if any of their guests are involved in an accident after consuming alcohol on their property. While the majority of homeowners insurance liability coverage may protect you in the event of a lawsuit, keep everyone safe, avoid legal hurdles, and enjoy the game without any unexpected penalties.

  5. Encouraging Responsible Drinking 🍻
Let's avoid fourth-quarter fumbles and make sure everyone gets home safely. Designate drivers in advance, and prep guests for longer Uber/Lyft waits and surcharge pricing. To prevent anyone from becoming too impaired, serve lots of food throughout the evening- especially high protein and non-salty foods in addition to a variety of non-alcoholic beverages. Also, stop serving alcohol at the beginning of the third quarter of the game and set out the football-themed desserts.

In addition to these tips, consult your Prepared insurance agent to review your coverage and understand your liability protection. It's like having an extra player on your team for the win! 🏆
